Time can have dramatic effects on the body the breasts are no exception. A womanÕs breasts can change in many ways including loss of skin elasticity, pregnancy, breast-feeding, weight gain or loss, aging, gravity and heredity.
What to expect from the consultation: During this visit it is important that you have someone with you. A spouse, close friend or family member. You will sit at length with your surgeon and discuss physical health, emotional health and goals for the procedure. The surgeon will examine you to determine the best method of reconstruction for you. It is important to be informative about:
- Past surgeries
- Past and current medical conditions
- Any medications and vitamins you are currently taking
- Any and all supplement you are using
- Allergies to drugs, foods, dyes and rubber
- Past experience with weight loss and the effect it had on your breast size
How the surgery is performed: Mastopexy is performed through incision around the areola and straight down to the fold. Some tissue is removed during this and the breasts are reshaped to give firmness and projection. At this time things such as larger areolas can be reduced if desired. Sutures are placed beneath the skin to create and support newly shaped breast tissue.
What to expect after the surgery: After surgery you will have to wear a support bra for two to four weeks 24/7. This will help with swelling and support during healing. You will be limited to activities for a few weeks but you can go back to work after the first week depending on your line of work. You will have some discomfort, bruising, swelling and tenderness. These all will subside within the week. Rarely will these symptoms last longer then two weeks.
