Labiaplasty is a procedure performed on women who dislike the large size of their labia minora. Local irritation, problems with personal hygiene, interference with sexual intercourse, discomfort during exercise and sports are indications for surgical reduction.
Enlarged labia can also be a cause of embarrassment with a sexual partner. Some women are born with enlarged labia whereas others develop the enlargement with age or as a result of child-birth. The prominence of the labia may cause women to feel self-conscious and unwilling to wear a bathing suit or snug shorts due to labia visibility through their clothing.
Labioplasty reduces the labia minora in size so that they are flush (even) with or hidden within the outer lips or labia majora. While Patients usually like to decide the size of their labia, it is important to remember that labia have an important function as well. The labia minora protect the vaginal orifice when the thighs are spread and therefore, overcorrection is not recommended.
A number of techniques are available for correcting this problem. The best approach is decided after listening to the patient’s desires and assessing the degree of enlargement. Surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia but local anesthesia with sedation can also be used.
Extreme care is taken to obtain as natural a result as possible and to avoid over-resection of the labia. Scars are minimal and normally only visible to the trained eye.
There will be a dressing in that area that will be similar to a pad worn during menstruation. Patients are advised to be on bed rest for one week. On and off application of cool compresses is advised to reduce swelling. Some bleeding and bruising is also expected for a few days after the procedure.
Patients may go back to their daily routines after one week but with extreme caution. Patients are to avoid strenuous activity as well as sexual intercourse for 4-6 weeks after surgery.
