The surgery of the neck is performed by placing incisions under the chin and around the ears. When there is an abundance of extra skin in this area, it needs to be removed as part of the lift. Sometimes liposuction is necessary but all this is determined by your surgeon at the time of your visit.
The visible edges of the loose neck muscles are sutured together and tightened. The surgery take about two and half hours and you will go home the same day.
During the first week after surgery you will experience some numbness and discomfort. You will have to wear a facial garment to keep compression on the area. For the first twenty-four to forty-eight hours you will be mostly be on bed rest.
Sleeping in a elevated position can sometimes help with the swelling. For the first week you should plan on remaining at home. Swelling and bruising usually subsides in 1 to 2 weeks.
During the second and third week you are allowed to gradually increase your activity. Excessive bending of the neck should be avoided during this period. Walking is encouraged but exercise and athletic activities are discouraged during the healing phase. Resumption of normal activities is allowed after 4 to 6 weeks.
